| Administrative Promotion at the University of Sint Eustatius
July 8, 2008

The University of Sint Eustatius School of Medicine (USESOM) is pleased to announce the promotion of faculty member Dr. Lori Trout to an administrative position. In her new position as Assistant Dean of Academic Services, Dr. Trout will be responsible for the development and implementation of academic and clinical support services (including developing and overseeing licensing board preparatory instruction and academic remediation programs) and curriculum innovation (including promotion of problem-based learning, integrative medicine, cultural competence and clinical sensitivity) at USESOM.
In addition to her administrative role, Dr. Trout will continue with her current responsibilities of co-directing the Clinical Medicine course in the 5th-term Basic Sciences program, chairing the Curriculum Committee, and leading the USESOM chapter of the American Medical Student Association and the Osler Club. She will also continue with her current community endeavors, which include founding the Pet Recycle Program as part of her affiliation with the Sint Eustatius Animal Welfare program and acting as the liaison between USESOM and the Sint Eustatius Diabetes Foundation.
Prior to her faculty appointment at USESOM, Dr. Trout worked at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) where she ran a specialty clinic treating hypertension and kidney disease patients. She also spearheaded the Spanish-language Patient Education Program for the Division of Renal and Hypertension at UTMB and was the recipient of the A.J. Rodriguez Academic and Leadership Award. From the philanthropic perspective, she has volunteered her medical services in both Mexico and Venezuela and has been an active member of various battered women’s shelters. She also built, with her own hands and funding, an animal shelter in Texas which is still operational, and volunteered as the only animal rehabilitation person for the area, facilitating the return of sick and injured animals back to the wild.
USESOM congratulates Dr. Trout on her well deserved promotion to an administrative position and looks forward to more of her innovative initiatives that continue to support students’ medical education at USESOM.
